A week of firsts

This is my first ever post on my first ever blog. After 10 awesome years working at Turner Broadcasting, I lost my job due to a huge company wide restructure. Thanks Turner 2020. This is the first time I have been unemployed since I graduated college. It’s a strange feeling for sure and I am not so sure it’s really hit me yet. More on that later, I’m sure.

However, because I had been with the company for so long I got a pretty little severance package and decided to take some time for myself to do the things I always wanted to do but could never find the time for. Like start a blog. So here I am at the end of my first full week as an unemployed citizen.

I decided to set little weekly goals for myself to achieve so as to not completely lose focus. My goals this week were purely for my enjoyment: do yoga Monday – Friday (when I would normally be at work) and start a blog. Check and check! I started doing hot yoga on a weekly basis this summer and I instantly loved it. This was the first time I ever did yoga five days in a row, it was hard but totally satisfying.

Surprisingly, putting this blog together was definitely the harder of the two goals. Mostly due to the fact that I don’t have a computer. I turned my work MacBook Air, along with my iPhone and internet hot spot, into work on my last day. My role at Turner required me to travel, a lot, so they provided me with a laptop, phone and a hotspot so that I could always be reachable and work from the road with ease.

After college I went from using the phone and laptop my father had provided for me to using the laptop and phone work provided for me. I had no idea how much money I was saving all these years! At the age of 33 I bought my first cell phone (and internet hotspot) and signed my first ever 2 year contract. Wow! Having a cell phone bill sucks! It is so expensive! I had total sticker shock when the lady assisting me told me how much it was all going to cost me a month, and she couldn’t believe I had never paid a cell phone bill in my life.

Welcome to adulthood.

So after that experience I decided I didn’t need a laptop and would just function with my iPad mini. Haha what a fool! The iPad is awesome for a lot of things but just cannot replace a laptop. For instance I couldn’t even start this blog on my iPad, not to mention I can’t edit my resume (not such a problem right now since I am not actively job hunting yet, but I suppose eventually I am going to have to find a job…right?) But then I got a great idea: I’ll just borrow my mom’s old laptop that she no longer uses.

So today  I finally finished setting up this blog while realizing that once you have worked on a Mac, you really can’t go back (you’re welcome for the rhyme). Fool (I feel like this is a reoccurring theme)! So I guess tomorrow I will be buying that new laptop after all, yet another first. It’s super fun spending a ton of money when one is unemployed! There’s something about this that seems backwards but I’ll just have to keep moving forward…

PS: my sweet dad said the above sounded a little negative which was not at all my intention as I’m actually really excited about my “time off” and looking forward to new adventures, this blog being one of them! So rest assured this blog is meant as a positive forum because at the end of the day that’s the kind of person I am.
